Understanding Blogs

An author multiple authors publish their content on an individual blog page and can receive feedback from their readers through comments. The blog page differs from aggregate page, which shows blog entries from across multiple blogs or from mirrored content. You can find out more about blogs by clicking here.

An individual blog is typically customized to reflect the author's personality. Below is a screen shot of a well-known blogger Larry Hryb (aka Major Nelson) the Director of XBox Live for Microsoft, whose blog is built with Community Server.

Another example of the flexible capabilities of the Community Server blogging application is MSNBC's Inside Dateline blog:

The Essentials

A blog is made up of several essential characteristics:

  1. Title & Description - Name of the blog and a brief description about the blog.
  2. Posts - Posts are typically shown either in an aggregate view (as shown below) or as individual posts.
  3. Additional information - Additional information relevant to the blog reader is shown in the sidebar of the page. This includes tools for the author, syndication options, tags, and more.
